What is TeachReadyNC and will it work?

North Carolina is overhauling its teacher pipeline through the launch of TeachReadyNC, a pioneering paid apprenticeship model authorized by the recent 2026 Appropriations Act (SB 257). Developed in partnership between the NCDPI, ApprenticeshipNC and BEST NC, the initiative directly addresses the state's growing reliance on uncertified educators. Last year, roughly 3,000 new teachers entered classrooms on Emergency or Permit to Teach licenses with zero prior training, facing a 47% attrition rate a year later. TeachReadyNC aims to break this unsustainable cycle by providing a structured, supported pathway that ensures educators receive proper training while earning a wage. Click here for deeper dive from EdNC.
